CMM Tops 22K; Product Debuts; Show-Floor Sales

MCCORMICK PLACE, CHICAGO, IL, USA—Show organizers Paperloop/Community Products released attendance numbers for the 14th biennial Converting Machinery/Materials (CMM) Intl. 2003 Conference and Expo Wednesday. Reports Paperloop VP Leo Nadolske, "Given the current state of the global economy, the war in Iraq, and the SARS scare, I am very pleased that 22,438 highly qualified converting professionals from 55 countries attended the show. Equally impressive is the fact there were strong sales on the show floor and that the overall outlook for future sales was very optimistic."
CMM's web site (cmmshow.com) noted many exhibitors were pleased "with both the quantity and quality of visitors during...the show."

Windmoeller & Hoelscher (whcorp.com) and Nordmeccanica (nordmeccanica.com) Valmet (valmetconverting.com), Max Kronert (kroenert.com), Jennerjahn Machine (jennerjahn.com), Stanford Products (stanfordproductsllc.com), Kodak Polychrome (kpgraphics.com), and Comexi (comexi.com) are among companies reporting sales off the show floor. According to CMM organizers, Nordmeccanica was "one of several companies selling a major piece of equipment during the first day of the show," reporting a printing press sale to converter Tech Seal (see picture below).

Liquid Control's FilmStar
FilmStar DL two-component variable ratio meter, mix, and dispense machine for solventless laminating adhesives. Co. reports features include: precision-gear metering pumps; password-protected touch pad; brushless AC motor drives; and optional EnGarde ratio monitoring system with precision inline flow meters. Faustel's FilmMaster Rewind Systems
Continous rewind with PerfectStart fold-free transfer technology, says co. Flying splicers reportedly allow continuous rewinding and eliminate down time for roll changes and related material use. According to co., patented transfer technology eliminates tail at the incoming core that causes scrap, and cantilever shaft with quick-release support simplifies roll handling. Daetwyler's Renzmann Type HA Washing Machine
Machine is a closed, automatic spray jet washing unit for thorough and gentle cleaning of anilox rollers, anilox sleeves, and gravure cylinders, reports mfr. Made of stainless steel, machine features special nozzle with pressure of 100 bar for optimal cleaning results, and pumps, pipes, and spray register are protected from foreign particles by two filters. Dusenbery's Worldwide Revolution Slitter/Rewinder
Co. says new generation of slitter/rewinders are designed to slash set-up times and feature a segmented top riding roll to eliminate set up. According to mfr., auto knife-positioning system and a hard stop-core locating system with positioning feedback enable you to get jobs up and running quickly and easily. Specs include: up to 80-in. web width; speeds to 2,000 fpm; min. slit width is 1 in.; rewind dia. 32. in.; slitting modes include shear, razor, and score; cantilevered/lift-out rewind mandrels; and control system can be PC or PLC with enhanced HMI graphics. Hanson Named Converter of the Year
Christian Hanson, president and CEO of Douglas-Hanson, was selected as this CMM's "Converter of the Year," according to CMM and Paperloop. "Considered one of the industry's most prestigious honors, the [award] is presented biennially to a converter, supplier, educator, or consultant who significantly advanced converting technology, business practices, industry education, or standards development," add the show organizers.
Today, Douglas-Hanson is widely recognized as a leader in radiation curing and for pioneering the use of electron beam and ultraviolet-cured silicone release liners in the use of film substrates. The Wisconsin-based firm is also bringing its leadership to the PE-coated paper markets. One of its clients' products, SC Johnson's disposable cutting boards, was just named one of the 'best products of 2002' by USA Today.
Says VP of Paperloop and CMM Events Leo Nadolske, "Chris Hanson's selection as this year's 'Converter of the Year' for his excellence in coating and film converting emphasizes the variety of technologies represented at CMM International.
