AICC Student Design Contest Honors Five Packaging Schools

ALEXANDRIA, VA, USA—The Association of Independent Corrugators (AICC) announces the winners of its annual Student Corrugated Packaging Design Competition. According to the trade group, this year almost 60 entries were received from packaging schools in the US and Canada, including the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Mohawk College, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), Michigan State University, and Clemson University.

AICC identifies the 2002 student winners:

  • Category One—Design to a Problem: first place, Matthew Bolton, RIT (Primal Elements candles shipper/display); second place, Mathieu Bedard and Tony Walker, Mohawk College (A Little Bit O'Luck/sample B); and third place, Alain and Marc Cachuat (CalPoly, Transformer Package candle box)
    This year, students that entered category one were asked to develope a solution for a real-world packaging problem using candle samples provided by Primal Elements, a client of Bay Cities Container, Pico Rivera, CA)

  • Category Three—Open Design: first place, Timothy Van Buskirk, Jared Mullikin, Meridith Sanford, Ann Sullivan, Nelson "Eric" Cureton, and Robert "Coy" Ralley, all from Clemson University for the university fire engine truck design; second place, Joseph Jones from CalPoly for wine bottle sleeve; and third place, Kendra Friend, Paxton Gross, Howard Beery, and Joseph Jones, all from Cal Poly for the Kenra Cellars point-of-purchase display.
  • Category Four—Corrugated as Art: first place, Colin Sexton, CalPoly for sailboat; second place, Anthony Kipp, Michigan State University for dragonfly; and third place, Alain, CalPoly for TGV Generation 4 Magler train.


  • There were no entries in Catetory Two: Design to an Existing Die.

AICC says, since 1991, it has been honoring college and university students that have designed winning corrugated packaging designs. The annual contest offers students of all levels the opportunity to enter four different categories; earn recognition for design talent; and win awards, cash prizes, and a trip to AICC's annual fall meeting. This year's first place winners will be hosted by AICC at its 2002 Annual Fall Meeting, slated for September 25 - 28, at the Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto.
