PackExpo Packs McCormick with Materials/Equipment/News

CHICAGO, IL, USA—PackExpo International boasts three full halls at McCormick Place in Chicago as well as plethora of new equipment innovations, technology, and material offerings for the converting and package printing industry. Though final attendance figures won't be tabulated for a few weeks, the busy hall floors (and myriad corners and crevices) of McCormick (as well as the buzz of leads and attendee interest) indicates the show is tracking pretty well overall. According to PMMI (Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute), PackExpo sponsor, 75,000 packaging professionals -- 50,000 qualified attendees -- are expected. Exhibitors PFFC spoke to during our editors' travels through the aisles have reported good attendance and seemed to be happy with the show's pace and staging.
PEF Honors Packaging Pros
PackExpo.com reports the Packaging Education Foundation (PEF) bestowed its Packaging Leader of the Year honor on Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, NY. PEF says the award recognizes Kodak's "high level of packaging innovation for consumer industrial products and support for packaging education." Pliant Corp. PP for Hot Packing
At this week's show, Pliant Corp. introduced a new line of polypropylene (PP) films for hot packing individually wrapped sliced (IWS) cheese. Pliant says its film "takes the heat" when molten cheese is poured onto it during the hot-pack process. "This new high-barrier film opens doors in the hot-packing industry," says Bob Chambliss, technical manager. "Pliant currently is exploring additional uses for this film as hot-packing technology is modified to incorporate oxygen barrier and aroma barrier for processing peanut butter and jelly slices, rolled fruit snacks, and processed meat slices." Amplas Whets Bag Interest with Dry-Sak
Amplas Inc. unveiled its Dry-Sak machine at Pack Expo. "Capable of making bags from a single sheet, without the use of glue and patches," says Amplas, "the Dry-Sak machine is ideal for products like fertilizer, cement, and sugar. Thomson Acquisition Complete
Thomson Motion Controls reports its acquisition by Danaher Motion has been completed as of PackExpo. Earlier this year, Danaher Corp. entered into a definitive merger agreement with Thomson Industries Inc. to acquire all of its outstanding shares. (Thomson is a developer and manufacturer of linear motion controls for several industries, including the printing and converting equipment industries.)
