MeadWestvaco to Close Envelope and Flex-Pack Plants

STAMFORD, CT , USA—MeadWestvaco Corp. reports it will close two manufacturing plants in Springfield, MA, and consolidate its Northeast envelope operations by "creating a single, high-powered manufacturing center in Enfield, CT." Adds the US-based converting industry supplier and multi-operation converter, while the envelope products headquarters will remain in Springfield, the Springfield envelope-making and flexible packaging plants will close by late November, "with some employees and equipment transferring to Enfield; other equipment will be used to enhance operations at envelope facilities around the country."

Says John Taylor, GM of envelope products—consumer and office products group: "The improvements we are making in our Enfield plant will be of enormous benefit to our customers. These plants share a common customer base, and by serving them out of a single northeastern site, we'll be able to deliver products faster and more efficiently."

MeadWestvaco says the consolidation of manufacturing facilities is a response to the ongoing evolution of the envelope products marketplace. Together, the Springfield flexible packaging and Enfield plants employ approximately 375 employees; the company says it expects to eliminate around 130 positions, offering affected employees restructuring benefits, which includes outplacement assistance.
