New Year Brings Positive Change

The new year is starting out with a number of positive changes for PFFC, some of which impact you directly. We hope you agree these changes facilitate your reading of the magazine, and I’d love to hear your comments. Here’s an outline of the changes you’ll experience, starting with this issue:
- No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. While the typeface is the same, it is slightly darker and heavier…all the better to read more easily, my Dear! We also increased the leading (space between lines). Whether your eyeballs are young and healthy or they’re in that age bracket when a pocket flashlight is at the ready for reading menus in near-dark restaurant conditions, a darker typeface will reduce the “squinting factor” substantially.
- Our new “rag right” columns also facilitate the reading process, reducing the number of hyphenated words compared to a justified column. This change may not turn you into a speed reader, but you should be able to read through the content faster. While these changes may seem minor, they help move the reading process along because we know your time is at a premium.
- You already may have noted from the cover of our October 2005 issue that we’re offering PFFC in an exact duplicate format as an E-zine. PFFC was the first in the converting industry to offer this format on a regular monthly basis, having previously tested the format in 2004. Don’t worry, the print version always will exist, but sometimes access to an electronic version simplifies finding information or reaching our advertisers to place inquiries about their products.
- To aid you further in moving through the editorial content, we moved some “departments” to a more logical placement within the magazine. “First Glance,” which we launched last July, introduces the editorial content, followed by events, our monthly columnists, “Converter Clips” (now incorporating people in the news), followed immediately by “Narrow Web & Label Reporter” and its own “What’s New” products. Feature articles and technical reports follow, with “What’s New” products (including equipment, materials, and services) and “the PLACE” occupying the penultimate position in the magazine flow. No more hither and yon placement of content—similar editorial is grouped together.
- Occupying a position of honor, a new column graces our last page, appearing this month on p60. Titled “Experience Speaks,” this column offers personal interviews by PFFC editors with leading converter administrators, focusing on their success in business, their leadership styles, role models, best and worst business advice they ever followed, books they recommend, etc. In short, it is a fun, must-read column containing lessons to lead by!
- Continuing with the theme of change, PFFC and its sister publications are proud to announce that our new owner, Wasserstein & Co., has chosen a new name for its business-to-business publishing division: Penton Media. If you wish to contact me with any comments or questions by e-mail, my new address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
- This last item isn’t a change but a promise to continue bringing you, since 1927, the best and most informative articles, expert advice, and current news on technical innovations to make your business more efficient, productive, and profitable.
