Labelexpo Sets a Record in Brussels
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM—Labelexpo Europe 2003, held September 24-27 at the Brussels Expo, set record attendance figures with more than 20,000 visitors. Organized by Tarsus Group, the show featured more than 400 exhibitors and a conference program that attracted 540 delegates. A full 25% of those attending were from non-European Union countries, with the greatest number (2,450) coming from Eastern Europe.

During the show, organizers announced the launch of the Labelexpo Industry Awards, comprising three categories: the R. Stanton Avery Award for Lifetime Achievement, sponsored by Avery Dennison; the Innovation and Service Award for Suppliers, sponsored by Labels & Labeling, Label & Narrow Web, and NarroWebTech; and the Innovation and Service Award for Converters, sponsored by four suppliers. The inaugural Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner will take place September 12, 2004, in Rosemont, IL, prior to Labelexpo Americas. In 2005 the ceremony will take place alongside Labelexpo Europe and the following year alongside Labelexpo in Asia.

Labelexpo Americas 2004 is scheduled for September 13-16 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center just outside of Chicago, IL. Labelexpo Europe 2005 will take place September 21-24 in Brussels. For more information contact Tarsus at +44 (0) 20 8846 2700 or visit tarsus.co.uk.

Chambered System Cuts Downtime in Half
HarperScientific.com, a div. of Harper Corp. of America, installed an enclosed chambered system on a Komori offset press for Harvard Label Co., located in California.

Says Michael Tang, president and owner of Harvard Label, “Since we have changed our metering system from rubber rolls to the HarperScientific.com enclosed chamber system on the Komori coating station, our coating laydown process is much more sufficient, and we have eliminated our downtime by at least 50%. We have no doubt we will see a rapid return on our investment.”

PLGA Requests Technical Awards Entries
NEW MADISON, OH, USA—The Packaging & Label Gravure Association (PLGA) is requesting entries for the 2003 “Technical Achievement Awards for Suppliers to the Gravure Industry for Packaging and Labels.”

The awards program, introduced in 2002, is intended to recognize and promote new or significantly improved products that will enhance the industry's position relative to other print technologies. Entries for each of three areas — prepress, pressroom, and support systems — will be judged using five equally weighted criteria: innovation, affordability, operating cost savings, quality improvement, and safety and/or environmental impact.

All entries must be commercially viable in 2003, and entry forms must be received no later than December 31.
