How did you get into the converting business?
By chance. Traditional recycling led to a chance introduction to silicone-coated release liners.
How has your management style evolved?
I've matured — less of a gambler — and I've transferred as much responsibility as possible.
How do you handle a difficult customer?
With kid gloves. Seriously, let the person who created the problem come up with the solution.
What are you most proud of in your business?
First of all, that we have a sustaining business that, while up and down, provides security for its employees and services that are meaningful to its customers and suppliers. Second, the dynamics of family involvement are both exciting and rewarding. I truly hope that someday I'll be able to witness employment of a third-generation family member. We'll see!
What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started out in business?
Nothing. If I'd known what I know now, I never would have started.
What is the best advice you ever got?

How do you spend your spare time?
I love the outdoors. Splitting wood in the fall and winter, along with gardening, are my true loves. Golf is there, too, but I get easily frustrated because I'm not too good. I love to play squash and enjoy jogging.
Do you have a personal hero?
Teddy Roosevelt. Bright, energetic, and a true visionary for our country and the world.
What is your key to retaining good employees?
Be fair and patient, listen, and provide a fun work environment.
