CLASSIC Journey
For the 2006 version of its Classic Series, MeadWestvaco blended new and traditional media: Kraftpak folding carton stock forms the mailing carton and Printkote bleached paperboard is used for the Digipak media packaging. A holiday tradition for MeadWestvaco's customers, the series has been produced continuously since 1958 (production runs have grown from 300 to 12,000 copies). This year's package, entitled A Silk Road Journey II, celebrates India and its growing role in the global economy. Included is a copy of E.M. Forster's novel, A Passage to India, with a new foreword, a music CD featuring contemporary sounds of India, and a DVD illustrating the book and music.

One Tough Package
Diamond Packaging, Rochester, NY, definitely kept the product in mind when creating an award-winning package for Redken for Men Bulk Up Thickening Spray. Honored with an AmeriStar Award in the 2006 IoPP competition, the package features a trapezoid shape with straight lines to convey a sense of dynamic energy. Inverted weight for the main panel communicates visually the sense of “bulking up.” The fifth-panel structure integrates with the base on which the bottle is displayed, encouraging customers to touch and hold the product. To complement the color of the bottle, Diamond used four-color offset printing with one special color ink in-line with UV matte varnish.
Music Box
Even its maker calls it “absurd,” but the Bogdon Box Bass, an actual upright bass made from a corrugated cardboard box, is fun, says Chris Badynee, and the sound quality is wonderful. His company makes the two-string instrument with C-flute boxes supplied by distributor uline.com. While Badynee says this creative use of materials has taught him it's structural design and air that really makes quality sound, he adds, “My box bass isn't a replacement for fine hand craftsmanship but rather a fun alternative to the status quo.
