Board & Beautiful

Holding an annual competition that recognizes excellence and creativity among its members is just one goal of the North American Packaging Assn., Alexandria, VA. Creating a wider demand for paperboard packaging is an equally important objective.

This year the association bestowed 29 gold awards and 105 excellence awards in 34 end-use classes and five judge's categories. Two Best of Show awards in the international competition were announced at NAPA's 2008 annual meeting March 29-April 1 at the Fairmont Pierre Marques in Acapulco, Mexico. No doubt these packages will be in demand.

Confection Package Wins Best Folding Carton

Utah Paper Box Co., Salt Lake City, UT, converted 0.016 solid bleached sulfate to package Stephany's Holiday Candy Line for Enstrom Candy. This family of packages earned the Lorne Ballance Award for Best Folding Carton, but that's not all. The entry won gold awards for Best Family of Packages and Best Surface Design & Execution (Type 2), as well as excellence awards for Confections, Best in Superiority of Construction, and Best Innovation.

The packages demand attention, and their unique sleeves provide an exceptional presentation for a rich line of confections. Sophisticated colors and outstanding graphics highlight the various candy offerings.

The corporate identity and logo are highly visible, making it recognizable in an often-crowded confections marketplace. Outstanding use of ultraviolet (UV) inks, varnish, UV coating, and embossing gives this award winner an elegant finish.

Stephany's Holiday Candy Line sleeves are produced on MAN Roland and Bobst equipment.

Best Rigid Box Is Promotional

Taylor Box Co., Warren, RI, converted silk, paper, foam, and chipboard to create the Dow Customer Hospitality Summer Olympics Registration Box for The Scott & Miller Group. In addition to winning gold awards for the Advertising & Promotional class, Best in Superiority of Construction, and Best Protective Package, Taylor Box earns the C. Taylor Kew Award for Best Rigid Box.

Beautiful silk fabric is laminated to solid 0.020 black board, creating a luxurious package. The dual opening lids are die-cut with a rounded shape and hinged to a bottom tray. Its interior frame includes die-cut foam and satin, displaying an extravagant tea set and summer Olympic registration material.

Foil stamping and an embossed label on the interior satin lid panel add distinction and glamour to the packaged product and help deliver documents in a chic and sophisticated style. Finch opaque 70# text and a Kluge stamper are used to manufacture the box.
