• Smurfit-Stone Container Corp., Chicago, IL, has partnered with Advanced Disposal Services to operate Advanced Disposal's materials recycling facility in Jacksonville, FL. Now with two facilities in Jacksonville, Smurfit-Stone can make recycling services more accessible to its customers and help Florida work toward its new statewide goal of 75% recycling by the year 2020.

• Litho Press Inc., Indianapolis, IN, has purchased a six-color press with UV coater from manroland, Westmont, IL. The 73-in. Roland 900XXL press, which includes the printnet operating and workflow integration system and power plate loading, allows the company to handle larger-format jobs and to print on stock from onionskin flysheet paper to 48-pt microflute board.

• The Recovered Fiber Group of Caraustar Industries, Atlanta, GA, and Domtar Corp., Montreal, QC, Canada, celebrated the tenth year of a paper recycling partnership with 14 area schools in Texas and Arkansas by presenting a check totaling $105,211 to be shared among the participating schools. The amount reflected school-based collections of approximately 824 tons of recyclable paper over the past 12 months, an increase of 100 tons over last year.

• Pacific Graphics Inc., City of Industry, CA, has purchased a new Mitsubishi Diamond V3000LX sheetfed press, engineered to print on stock across a thickness range from 0.0016-0.040 in. Accommodating heavier board will enable PGI to branch out into packaging.

• Atlas Container Corp., Severn, MD, has upgraded to the latest version of HRMS Release 2006 corrugated business software from Solarsoft Business Systems, Vancouver, BC, Canada. The new order management module, E-business, allows customers to place orders, manage inventory, and access order status and history online.

Blister Package Offers Bottle Convenience

CHICAGO, IL

Colbert Packaging Corp. has introduced the ComplyPak package, which combines blister compliance with the convenience and safety of amber medication bottles. ComplyPak is primarily paper-based, consisting of fully brandable paperboard with a thermal-formed blister tray and child-resistant cap.

ComplyPak delivers a three-step process — push, align, and remove — that makes it easy for elderly patients to use. The unique design incorporates a child-resistant cap on the blister card, so once tablets are pressed through the foil backing, they are expelled into a cavity, which can be accessed only by aligning the arrows of the child-resistant cap for release.

Online Portal for Cartons Goes 3D

Hiflex Corp. has created a web-to-print storefront for proprietor German Brodbeck that allows customers to dynamically select, configure, and order boxes via the Internet. Following product selection, www.boxshop24.com offers free downloads of die-cutting templates for the most common desktop publishing programs — QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, and Adobe Photoshop — permitting customers to match designs to the exact contours of the box. The corresponding print data then is sent to the website by way of the integrated data upload function.

“One aim of our storefront is to reduce the administrative costs of particularly short-run orders for folding boxes,” says Brodbeck. “It is intended as a self-seller, functioning without personal advice and consultation.” In many cases, Brodbeck says, users are simply customers looking to buy a relatively simple folding box at a more favorable price.

Inspect Corrugated

The Captor inspection tool performs in-line quality assurance of corrugated box folding and gluing. Live images of boxes are analyzed at full production speed for slotting, gluing, and skewing problems. High-speed CCD camera technology and custom lighting produce more than 10,000 images/sec of the tab or fourth panel areas. Software evaluates entire image and identifies specific failures.

Avoid Secondary Repositioning of Piles

Sheeter design allows operator to offset the tail end of the sheeted stock from the back edge of standard-sized skids so there is no need for the intermediate step of aerating and rejogging piles prior to loading into the printing press feeder. Vibrating back jogger system mounts at the end of delivery system and protrudes out over the stacker's load table. By positioning standardized pallet against stacker's backstop, up to 4-in. (100-mm) offset of the pile, relative to skid, can be achieved.
