Smurfit-Stone Earns Safety-Awards from PSSMA

CHICAGO, IL—The Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Assn. (PSSMA) has honored three Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. multiwall bag packaging plants with 2004 Plant Safety Awards. The plants reportedly achieved the lowest recordable case rate (RCR) among peer operations, as measured by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The recognized plants are:

• Cantonment, FL (425,000 – 650,000 manhours category)
• Wellsburg, WV (300,000 – 425,000 manhours category)
• Quincly, IL (less than 300,000 manhours category)

PSSMA compiled statistical information from 35 multiwall bag packaging plants within the organization to designate the awards. Ten of these plants shared the manhour category with Smurfit-Stone.
