PPC’s Markens Addresses European Carton Industry
- Published: October 10, 2014
SPRINGFIELD, MA | On September 18, 2014, Ben Markens, president of the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), delivered a presentation to a record number of attendees at the joint European Carton Makers Association and European Association of Carton and Cartonboard Manufacturers (Pro Carton) Congress in Sorrento, Italy.
In his presentation, Markens predicted steady growth for the North American folding carton industry, citing key points from PPC’s soon-to-be released Trends 2014 Industry Outlook and Market Data Report, PPC’s 2014 Business Sentiment Report, and PPC’s latest Market Flash Report. He also shared insights on the North American legislative landscape and its effects on the domestic paperboard packaging industry.
Markens called upon the 2014 Business Sentiment Report to suggest that North American converters continue to exhibit more optimism about future business growth as compared to their European counterparts. He also highlighted recent increases in total boxboard production and carton shipments. He next turned to the results from the 2014 Trends Report to address the current and future activity of 17 end-use markets. He finished off his presentation by addressing some pertinent legislative issues such as California’s Proposition 65 and the USDA BioPreferred Program.
“As always, it was an honor to exchange folding carton industry insights at the ECMA/Pro Carton Congress,” says Markens. “It is important that we keep an open dialogue with our European counterparts in the industry so that we may anticipate domestic challenges as well as bolster the global paperboard packaging market.”
