Ampac Announces Ultra-High-Barrier Film

CINCINNATI, OH | Ampac has introduced Flexi FoilFree HB, an ultra-high-barrier film technology that company says can achieve moisture, oxygen, and vapor barrier properties approaching aluminum foil laminates without the use of foil when incorporated in a laminate.
Laminates are said to provide excellent product performance characteristics compared to traditional thin-gauge foil materials. Reportedly, flex-crack and puncture resistance properties are significantly improved in composites when used in place of foil, while also providing easier “tear-open” properties over foil-based substrates.
Other reported benefits of new technology include the following:
Laminates provide a more sustainable alternative to foil-based materials;
Packaging has improved yield and is lighter weight versus comparable foil substrates, yielding lower greenhouse gases and requiring less energy consumption in manufacturing and distribution;
Laminates utilizing Flexi FoilFree HB barrier film have the look and feel customers’ demand from their packaging, without compromising package or product integrity;
Packaging produced with film retains its defined appearance even after processing and handling, eliminating the shop-worn appearance that is typical with foil based packaging;
Film laminate is economical when compared to aluminum foil-based composites Laminates provide improved barrier over typical metallized barrier films.
Company says packaging applications for the barrier film are numerous in the healthcare, food, and industrial markets. Applications for the healthcare market include diagnostics, drug delivery, biotech, and medical device markets. Reportedly, Flexi FoilFree HB laminates have successfully replaced 3- and 4-ply foil laminates in the food sector, packaging both dry and liquid food products such as cake mixes, powdered soups, dips, gravies, and liquid cheese sauce.
