Paper Cup Is Engineered for Recyclability

NEWPORT BEACH, CA | Smart Planet Technologies Inc., a producer of barrier coatings that address sustainability challenges in packaging, announces the commercial availability of the reCUP, said to be the first commercially available paper cup engineered for recyclability.

Unlike traditional paper cups, produced from polyethlyene-coated paper cup stock, which are difficult for recyclers to process, the reCUP leverages EarthCoating barrier technology and may be processed through existing paper recycling streams without any need for special handling or additonal equipment.

The reCUP is a recyclable paper cup that can be reclaimed and turned into recycled paperboard. Industry adoption of the reCUP has the potential to avoid sending more than 50 billion paper cups worth of valuable paperboard to US landfills each year. This alone can potentially solve two-thirds of the one-million ton fiber shortfall projected by the recycled paper industry for the year 2020, the company reports.
