Cantel Medical Corp., Pittsburgh, PA, is incorporating Biosafe antimicrobial additive in a number of products, including the Crosstex Ultra Sensitive Face Mask. The treated mask is effective against H1N1 and other influenza A viruses plus a range of other microorganisms, including MRSA bacteria. While the Biosafe additive is available as a powder or pellet concentrate or solvent dispersion for use in plastic applications, the face mask is treated with the additive in an aqueous polymer dispersion. Crosstex applies the treatment to the outer layer of the mask, a fluid-resistant spunbond material. The treatment, which chemically binds to the outer surface of the mask, creates a long-lasting shield against microbial contamination.
