Teknor Apex PVC Film Suited for Medical Uses

INDUSTRY, CA | Teknor Apex Co. reports a new family of calendered PVC films for medical applications incorporates a non-phthalate citrate plasticizer said to be stable in applications sterilized by gamma irradiation.

Designated MF-165-J3R-79NT, the film grade is available in thicknesses from 0.006–0.020 in. (0.15–0.5 mm), widths to 60 in. (1,525 mm), and slitting down to 2.0 in. (51 mm). The film exhibits a Shore A hardness of 81, specific gravity of 1.25, tensile strength of 2,700 psi (18.6 MPa), and elongation of 300%.

Richard Vega, manager of the Teknor Apex Vinyl Div. film calendering facility, says the company’s calendering process used for producing the film, the company fuses flexible vinyl compound and passes it through a series of synchronized nip rolls. “The advantages of calendering include thickness uniformity, consistent physical properties, thermal stability, and the availability of various embossed finishes,” says Vega.
