Unique Cast Film Line Operating in China
Macro Engineering reports it shipped, in June 2003, a “one-of-a-kind” seven-layer, 2.4-m-wide cast barrier film line to a Chinese manufacturer of barrier film located in Suzhou in the Jiangsu province of China.
The line is designed to produce 2.1-m-wide barrier films from 35-250 microns using PP, PA, EVOH, and PVDC. Structures containing PVDC are produced using encapsulation to prevent this barrier resin from contacting the metal surfaces of the feedblock and die.
The line, CXL-7210, includes nine extruders, seven for each of the seven layers plus two for encapsulating the two edges. The melt stream of one of the tie layer extruders is diverted to provide PVDC encapsulation. Macro reports the CXL-7210 is the first of its kind in the world.

ICE Makes a Move to Munich
MUNICH, GERMANY—The third biannual International Converting Exhibition (ICE) will hold its 2003 edition at the Munich M.O.C. Exhibition Centre in Germany, November 18-20, a change from Amsterdam, where the first two were located. Show organizers expect 3,000-5,000 attendees and 130-150 exhibiting companies.
A conference program will address surface treatment of films; coating plastic films; the converting, coating, and laminating value chain and market worldwide; tape converting; and an introduction to converting that will cover materials, process chains, and all the basic converting processes.
The Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters & Laminators (AIMCAL) will sponsor its own pavilion, with space for 12 companies. As of presstime, 6 companies had signed up, and AIMCAL reports it is in discussion with others. For more information on the pavilion, visit aimcal.org.

Ampacet Expands Around the Globe
TARRYTOWN, NY, USA—Ampacet Corp. has signed letters of intent to purchase three major suppliers of custom color masterbatches in Europe and South America: Polimaster S.r.L., Busto Garolfo, Italy; PolyColour Ltd., Telford, England; and Corland of Camacari, Bahia, Brazil. The company also announces plans to expand current facilities in South America, Canada, and Asia, and it has opened new commercial offices in Shanghai, China; Mumbai, India; and Mexico City, Mexico.

NPES Launches Eurasian Sales/Service
RESTON, VA, USA—NPES, The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishin, and Converting Technologies, has launched the Eurasia Sales and Service Center for Graphic Communications Technologies in Moscow. The goal of the project is to provide a convenient location for printers and distributors in Russia and neighboring Eurasian countries to see demonstrations of the latest US technology, and to receive training and assistance with service and parts.
NPES notes the Russian printing industry grew 25% in 2001 and 12% in 2002 to sales of $2.5 billion. Russia imported $500 million worth of printing, publishing, and converting equipment and consumables in 2002, according to figures from the Russian Printing Industry Association.
The US Trade and Development Agency provided a $164,000 grant to the Russian Printing Industry Assn. to create the facility, in an agreement that names NPES the sole contractor to establish and manage the center.
