Fazer, Marvaco and Pyroll Pilot GreenerPrinting™

Fazer, Marvaco and Pyroll take a step towards more sustainable packaging production on a large scale as they pilot GreenerPrinting™ on Fazer Puikula bread packages.

“With changes to the color separation, we can use 25 percent less ink compared to our previous printing method for the Fazer Puikula Pehmeämpi Täysjyvä packages,” said Piia Soininen-Tengvall, senior manager of packaging development at Fazer Bakeries.

For the Fazer Puikula Pehmeämpi Täysjyvä product, the eco-efficiency of the printing has been increased by performing the color separation with Expanded Gamut Printing (EGP™), which is a prerequisite for receiving the GreenerPrinting™ label. The EGP technology allows for reduced environmental impact in addition to high-quality prints. In this new technology, the inks that have traditionally been mixed manually have been replaced with standardized, digitally separated primary colors. The method reduces both ink consumption and the need to clean the printing machine between runs. Consequently, the reduction in process cleaning decreases both ink waste and the use of cleaning solvents.

“This is a large-scale pilot where we can follow the benefits of EGP in the production a high-volume consumer product, in co-operation with the brand owner and packaging printing company,” said Kai Lankinen, Marvaco’s chairman of the noard.
