Excellence United for Battery Electrode Converting

Roll-to-roll technology experts Faustel, from Germantown, Wisconsin, and Jagenberg Converting Solutions, from Hamburg, Germany, have teamed up to provide their expertise in precision coating, winding, slitting, drying and calendaring machinery. Combining decades of expertise, they exhibit the reliability and strategic competence needed to establish complex projects such as giga factories in North America.

PFFC recently had a conversation with Chris Clark, Faustel’s Vice President of Sales and Technology, and Thomas Lebbing, JCS’s Managing Director. Topics included flexible turnkey solutions, joint market presence, access to innovations, and what collaboration offers U.S. manufacturers of batteries and fuel cells.

PFFC: Mr. Lebbing, Mr. Clark, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. What advantages can U.S. companies expect from your collaboration?

Clark: In our joint effort, we are offering innovative turnkey solutions which address companies that are invested in electrode, fuel cell and battery separator production. Both JCS and Faustel bring long-standing experience, excellent reputations and flexible designs with modular components to the table.

Lebbing: These solutions are configured according to specific requirements making us technical leaders in the U.S. Moreover, we are the one-source partner for converting equipment in the energy segment who offers refined solutions — from coating and drying to the slitting and winding processes, as well as premium machinery for wet and dry calendaring. Being part of the international Jagenberg Group, JCS also provides the financial backing necessary to handle the large-scale energy projects that will rapidly expand in scope and size.

PFFC: And what do Faustel and JCS garner from the partnership?

Lebbing: Well, Faustel is very well known for its scalable converting equipment in the energy segment, and JCS has been supplying many large scale electrode coating and production lines to European giga factories. United, we are setting standards, and we are expanding our market reach to U.S. and Canadian customers.

Clark: … and it grants us access to markets and segments beyond that. Being engineers at our core, both of our teams benefit greatly from each other’s expertise and passion. Accelerating the development and integration of new technologies into our portfolio is one aspect, but we are also leveraging one another when addressing customer service needs and providing a comprehensive response.

PFFC: Apart from service and developing new technologies, how does JCS and Faustel working together become palpable for U.S. customers?

Clark: Both of our technology centers, Faustel’s in Germantown, WI, and JCS’s in Hamburg, Germany, will drive the development of new and advanced converting technologies …

Lebbing: … which also includes our state-of-the-art slot die technology as well as calendaring and drying expertise. Clark: Exactly. Our Process Technology Center allows trials on the most advanced coating lines in the industry and make for a unique value proposition in this extremely dynamic market.

Lebbing: Potential customers looking to equip battery or fuel cell plants with efficient, reliable and future-proof precision machinery will benefit significantly from our combined expertise — that’s why we are giving our partnership the motto “Excellence United.”
