Paper Recycling at All-Time High in US

NEW YORK, NY

The American Forest & Paper Assn. (AF&PA) reports 56% of the paper consumed in America was recovered for recycling in 2007. This is an all-time high and an industry goal that is five years ahead of schedule, says AF&PA, which has set a new goal of 60% recovery by 2012.

The 54.3 million tons of paper recovered in 2007 add up to more than 360 lbs for every person in America. Each percentage point is the equivalent of approximately 1 million additional tons of recovered paper.

AF&PA president and CEO Donna Harman says, “Industry is demonstrating a real commitment to environmental sustainability by continuing to set and achieve aggressive paper recovery goals. … Paper recovery is something we can all do to make a difference.”
