Plants for Pretzels
- Published: May 01, 2010
A bag created for Snyder's of Hanover organic pretzels uses raw materials that are 90% plant-based, part of the “Project EarthClear” packaging initiatives of Clear Lam Packaging, Elk Grove Village, IL. During a year of R&D, Clear Lam replaced conventional petroleum-based plastics with material derived primarily from renewable Ingeo PLA from NatureWorks. To create the appropriate oxygen- and moisture-barrier properties, the film was laminated to another plant-based plastic layer that incorporates a thin metallized layer. A bright yellow graphic on the corner helps differentiate the bag on the shelf and directs consumers to the back panel for more information. James Sanfilippo, president of Clear Lam, says, “We're pleased to bring this technological breakthrough to our customers in order to support global sustainability initiatives.”
